Tips to Keep Your Newly Adopted Pug Healthy

Bringing home a new pug is a very exciting and rewarding experience! When you adopt from a shelter not only do you save the animal you bring home, but you also create new space in the shelter for a different animal to be given the opportunity to find their forever home.

Still, it’s important to consider how you plan to continue making the adoption experience a positive one for everyone involved. As the adopter of a cute pug, it’s your responsibility to make sure that they can live their best life while staying healthy. Here are five tips to help you do just that!

Pet Proof Your Home

The first thing you can do to make sure your new best friend is safe and healthy is to pet proof your home before adopting them. This means that you shouldn’t have food like chocolate, coffee, grapes, nuts, etc laying around. You also want to make sure prescriptions, over the counter medications, and plants can’t be accessed.

There are many dangerous holdhould items to pets that you might not be aware of, so you want to make sure they are all kept in secure locations. A good rule of thumb is that if you are unsure if something is safe for your pug,  assume it’s not and put it out of reach.

Regular Vet Check Ups

Bringing your newly adopted pug to the veterinarian for a check up is another great way to ensure they remain healthy. Doing this will allow the veterinarian to assess your pug’s overall physical health (their lungs, weight, joints, skin/coat, teeth, etc.), document their growth and development, give them their required and recommended vaccinations, and address common problems pugs have.

Furthermore, this is a great opportunity for you to ask your veterinarian any questions you may have about your furry friend, or even bring up any concerns you might have. Ideally, you’ll want to bring your pet to the veterinarian at least once a year for a routine checkup.

Regular veterinary visits, while important, can also get expensive. To account for this, make sure you consistently set funds aside for your furry friend. You may also want to consider pet insurance for your pug.

Pet insurance helps cover the costs of regularly planned veterinary visits and unexpected trips. It is extremely beneficial if you are on a tight budget and feel like you might need help with vet bills in the future. After all, as the pet parent, it is your responsibility to make sure that your pug can get the proper medical care they need at all times.

I.D. Your Pug

According to a recent American Humane Report, around 10 million pets get lost from their owner every year in the U.S. Hence, making sure your furry friend has the proper identification associated with them is a key way to help them stay safe if they ever do get lost.

There are two ways to properly identify your pug. The first way is by using an I.D. tag, in which you provide your name, phone number, and home address on the back of the tag, along with their name on the front. This way, if your pug gets lost and someone finds them, they can contact you and give you back your pet safely.

The second way is by microchipping your furry friend. Each microchip has a unique I.D. number that coincides with a specific animal. Vets can use the I.D. number to contact the pet owner and return their best friend to them in healthy condition.

Lots of Exercise

Exercise is important for pets to remain healthy throughout the course of their life. Pets who get regular exercise tend to have lower blood pressure, less anxiety, and stronger muscles. By simply taking your pug for a walk, you can also help them to burn off excess energy so they remain less rowdy.

On the other hand, if your pug doesn’t get adequate exercise then they can become overweight, or even obese! Not to mention that they can become bored, which increases the risk of  aggressive behavior, in which they become more hostile to animals and people.

Regular Grooming Visits

Lastly, make sure your adopted pug remains happy and healthy by bringing them to the groomers regularly. Your furry friend can benefit from regular grooming appointments. There, they will be able to get their coats trimmed and brushed, allowing dead and damaged hair to be removed.

Besides, it will help get rid of fleas and ticks that could be lurking in the coat of your furry friend. Your pug needs to get their nails trimmed on a regular basis, as overgrown nails can cause discomfort and even pain. What’s more, when your pug is well groomed you can spot any bumps and bruises that might be concerning to their health.

Following these tips will help you keep your newly adopted best friend healthy. However, always remember, accidents happen and your pug will likely get sick or hurt at some point. The most important thing to do is to always take good care of them. Our adopted pets bring so much happiness into our lives, so we must do all we can to keep them happy and healthy for years to come.
